India condemns Benghazi attack

India on Wednesday strongly condemned the “violent acts,” which resulted in the death of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and other officials.

Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai spoke to the U.S. Ambassador in Delhi and conveyed his condolences. “We are deeply shocked at the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi,” said a spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Security at various American establishments, including its embassy here and four consulates, has been stepped up following the killing of the U.S. envoy and the protest at its mission in Egypt.

“We have directed beef-up of security at all U.S. missions in the country,” Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told journalists.

The U.S. has consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad.

All the five U.S. diplomatic missions and other establishments come under “high-risk” category and are provided round-the-clock security.
