Hyderabad duo wins Young World quiz contest in Mumbai

Pranav Mihir Kandada and Arjun Kallapur were the winners of last year’s edition

The Hyderabad Public School (HPS) on Monday emerged victor in The Hindu Young World Quiz, 2013 here by a winning margin of 83 points.

Pranav Mihir Kandada and Arjun Kallapur, the first non-Mumbaikars to participate in the quiz, were the winners of last year’s edition, which was held in their home city.

The Hindu Young World Quiz 2013 organised at the YB Chavan Auditorium on Monday. “Since we could not hold a quiz [in Hyderabad] due to political reasons, they decided to come all the way to Mumbai,” said quizmaster V.V. Ramanan. Mr. Ramanan said the turnout for the preliminary rounds, conducted for 101 teams from more than seven city-based schools, was very good and more applicants were expected next year. The quiz is conducted across 15 centres and sponsored by Britannia. The HPS pairing won after they correctly answered “

Anandamath by Bankim Chatterjee” to the question “which literary work does the Indian National Song belong to and who was the work’s author?” Most other contestants submitted the answer “Vande Mataram”.

The team answered several “difficult” questions correctly. What was the contribution for which the Yankees remember Francis Scott Key? “He wrote the U.S.’ national anthem, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’,” answered the HPS boys in a flash. One of the rounds required contestants to unveil a portrait — part by part — by answering questions correctly. Every right answer would reveal a segment of the image while a wrong answer would obscure it permanently. A self-portrait of Dutch painter Rembrandt proved to be among the tougher images to unravel. Answers ranged from “Vincent van Gogh” to “Michelangelo” to “Leonardo da Vinci.”
