Social activist Anna Hazare on Monday visited Rajghat and sat in the lawns in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi, taking authorities by surprise.

On the eve of his fast for a strong Lokpal Bill, Mr. Hazare went to the samadhi of the Mahatma late afternoon and meditated there for over an hour.

The 74-year-old anti-corruption crusader and his supporters have been denied permission to stage their protest at Jai Prakash Narain Park in New Delhi by Delhi Police.

The impromptu visit to Rajghat on Independence Day was unscheduled and the visitors were surprised to see the Gandhian in their midst sitting in front of the samadhi.

The visit also caught police by surprise, prompting them to rush a team of officers to the memorial.
