Justice Karnan may or may not have left the country: counsel

A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court had sentenced him to six months imprisonment and ordered his immediate arrest after finding him guilty of contempt of court.

Calcutta High Court Judge C.S Karnan “may or may not have left the country,” his lawyer W. Peter Ramesh told The Hindu, refusing to clarify if the controversial judge has left the country.

“He wants to prepare an appeal to the President of India. Until the final orders are passed by the seven judges when it can be reviewed by him he wants an interim bail. He also wants the President to forward his complaint, which is lying before him neither accepted nor rejected, to Parliament for impeachment proceedings for himself,” the lawyer said.

A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar, on Tuesday held Justice Karnan guilty of “contempt of court, judiciary and judicial process of the gravest nature” and sentenced him to six months imprisonment. The Bench ordered the West Bengal police to execute its order immediately. The contempt proceedings were initiated in February for his derogatory letters against sitting and retired High Court and Supreme Court judges.

Police personnel of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are trying to locate Justice Karnan.

Mr. Ramesh said Justice Karnan wanted the President, his appointing authority, “to file a case before the International Court of Justice as in the case of Pakistani prisoner whose stay [on his execution] has been granted.”

“Until then he wants to keep himself away from the police so that he can prepare the papers and produce them before the bail authority,” he said.
