The Guwahati metro rail proposal has been approved by the Union government.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told journalists on Thursday that the Centre had sanctioned Rs. 25 crore for conducting feasibility studies for the proposed service. The project, to be carried out in three phases and covering a total distance of 65 km, is estimated to cost Rs.14,000 crore. The State government would expedite preparation of the Detailed Project Report.
In the first phase, work would be taken up from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport to Narengi area of the city. In the second phase, it would be from Paltanbazar to Khanapara and in the third, from Khanapara to Jalukbari area. It would take more than five years to complete the project.

Mr. Gogoi, who holds the Finance Portfolio, earmarked Rs. 2,500 crore in the 2013 budget to enable the Assam Infrastructure Financing Authority to take up infrastructure projects, including the metro project.
The Chief Minister said the government had also undertaken plans for development of other towns and to build townships to check migration of people to the city.
On the implementation of the Food Security Ordinance in the State, he said the government would impress upon the Centre need to adopt a 90:10 funding pattern, as applicable in other Central schemes for the north-eastern States.
