Goa police get custody of Tejpal

Goa Crime Branch officials began interrogating Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka magazine Tarun Tejpal on Sunday, soon after Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Panaji, Kshama Joshi, remanded him for six days in police custody.

Goa police had sought 14-day custody.

The Hindu in the evening that they were interrogating Mr. Tejpal at the Crime Branch office at Dona Paula near here, where he was taken from JMFC Court on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, Mr. Tejpal was arrested at the Crime Branch office at 9 p.m. after his application for anticipatory bail was rejected by District and Sessions Judge Anuja Prabhudesai just a little after 8 p.m. After the mandatory medical check-up at the State-owned Goa Medical College hospital at Bambolim a few minutes past midnight, he was lodged at the Panaji police lock up.

Legal counsel close to Mr. Tejpal ruled out appealing against the police custody.

Mr. Tejpal has been accused of sexually assaulting his junior colleague during the THINKfest event organised by his magazine at a five star hotel at Bambolim, north Goa, in early November.
