Two more militants, jawan killed in Handwara encounter

Two more militants and one soldier were killed in a two-day long operation in north Kashmir's Handwara area, taking the toll to seven including four militants and three soldiers in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, a policeman in central Kashmir decamped with four service rifles, sending security agencies into a tizzy. A Srinagar-based Army spokesman told The Hindu that the operation launched in Nowgam Sector in Kupwara district's Handwara area on Saturday afternoon continued on Sunday, with fresh exchange of firing resulting in more casualties. "A total of four terrorists have been killed in the operation. Three soldiers also attained martyrdom in the operation," said the Army spokesman. Two militants, believed to be fresh infiltrators, and two soldiers, were reported dead on Saturday. The operation seems concluded as the Army has recovered four weapons and war-like stores from the encounter site. The gunfight between the militants, who crossed the Line of Control recently in the frontier district, and the soldiers lasted for more than 36 hours.
