Four bombs went off early on Monday here as Manipur celebrated the 66th Republic Day. The blasts occurred between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. at Polem Leikai, Yaiskul, New Chekkon and Hatta near Kangla, where the Republic day function was held. There was no human casualty.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh unfurled the national flag at Kangla in the heart of Imphal town. The function was held in all districts and sub-divisional headquarters as well. 120 contingents gave salute to Mr. Ibobi Singh who was the chief guest of the function.

Later, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei thanked the contingents during a function at 1 Manipur Rifles ground. He observed that elsewhere in the country, Republic day functions were being held in a free atmosphere, whereas in Manipur there were threats and other forms of intimidation. The "huge presence" of people from all walks of life at the national function, Mr. Gangmei said, indicated an affinity towards unity in the country.
