Former Foreign Secretary A.P. Venkateswaran passes away

Former Foreign Secretary A.P. Venkateswaran (85) passed away at a private hospital here on Tuesday afternoon.

He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

Mr. Venkateswaran was chairman of the Asia Centre, which is engaged in organising interaction and discussions on issues pertaining to Asian countries. He had made headlines when he resigned from his post in January 1987, after he was snubbed by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Mr. Venkateswaran had said that his resignation had been a spontaneous action as he had always believed that life without honour was no living at all.
