Former Army chief General J.J. Singh on Wednesday resigned from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) citing personal reasons.
In his resignation letter dated December 11, 2018 addressed to Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, the former Army Chief announced that he was resigning from the party owing to personal reasons.
Gen. Singh joined the SAD in 2017 and had unsuccessfully contested against Chief Minister Amarinder Singh from the Patiala Assembly seat.

“I wish to inform you with a heavy heart that I have resigned from Shiromani Akali Dal and from the position of president of Shiromani Akali Dal, Ex-Servicemen wing with immediate effect due to personal reasons," he said in his letter
In a letter addressed as ''message to people of Punjab'', Gen Singh, wrote ''...I am unhappy with actions of the leadership of SAD in last few years, such as those raised in the social media and TV channels and various demonstrations, and protests..”
“...Today, I feel disillusioned particularly with what I have seen and experienced in Punjab since 2016. Further my mission to serve the people will not be affected by this decision,” he wrote in the letter.

Gen. Singh became the first Sikh chief of the Army in January 2005 and had served as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.
