Eight killed in Kokrajhar, curfew clamped

Eight persons were killed by miscreants in sporadic incidents of violence in lower Assam's Kokrajhar district since Friday night, prompting the district administration to clamp curfew on Saturday.

Lower Division Commissioner Shabir Hussain told The Hindu that miscreants killed four persons at Joypur area under Kokrajhar police station, while four were killed elsewhere in the district triggering tension.

Indefinite curfew has been clamped in the district with relaxations to allow people to conduct religious prayers.

Mr Hussain said the Army has been kept on standby to assist the civil administration, if required.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi rushed Transport Minister Chandan Brahma to take stock of the situation. Mr. Brahma has appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.

The State government has announced ex gratia of Rs. 3 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
