Left parties slam Venkaiah’s decision

April 23, 2018 09:15 pm | Updated 09:42 pm IST - NEW DELHI

The Left parties on Monday criticised the decision of Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu to dismiss the notice given by Opposition MPs for the impeachment of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

“The hasty dismissal of the impeachment notice given by MPs of 7 parties is blatantly illegal & unconstitutional. BJP govt. is abusing constitutional posts to muzzle all democratic means of redressal. It also happened in the case of the no-confidence motion during the Budget session,” CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury tweeted.

“If this is not the breakdown of the Constitution, then what is? If the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha is going to decide on the merits of a notice of impeachment, then what is the Inquiry panel supposed to do? That’s the reason why no earlier notice for impeachment has been rejected by the Chair so far.”

He added: “Opposition parties will take recourse to ALL means to ensure that India’s Constitution is protected and implemented in its true spirit.” CPI leader D. Raja said the Opposition parties would have to consult among themselves about their future course of action.

“Concerned parties will have to examine the grounds on which the motion has been rejected by the Vice-President. We will have to consult among us, especially those who moved the motion,” he said. “We have to share our views and decide on the future course of action. We will consult among Left parties and all other parties.”
