The awards come in five categories: Photo of the Year, Photo Story of the Year, General News, Sports, and People/Portraits. This is open to those who have published a photo or photostory/photo essay in an established print or online publication. Winners will receive a trophy and cash prices ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh each.

Indian citizens and those who are residents of India for five years, above the age of 18, can submit their published works. The awards come in association with the CPB Foundation, a non-profit trust that is organising the Chennai Photo Biennale (CPB) in early 2019, and Kitkarma.

An independent jury of senior photographers and academics will judge the images through a two-step process. The first shortlist will be announced in January. The award ceremony will be held in February 2019 in Chennai as part of CPB 2019.
