Dalit youth beaten up in Maharashtra when he asked for wages

A Dalit youth in Maharashtra’s Osmanabad district was beaten up in full public view by a dominant caste landowner after the former asked for wages due to his family.

The incident took place on Monday in Sarola village. Raju Dhaktode (21), whose father worked as labourer in the fields of Vinod Patil from the Maratha caste, asked for wages on behalf of his father. As per the work agreement, Mr. Patil was to give Raju’s father Ananda Dhaktode 250 kg jowar in return for his labour.

In fact, Mr. Patil’s deceased father also owed a sum of Rs. 10,000 to Ananda Dhaktode.

According to Mr. Raju, Mr. Vinod Patil refused to give the foodgrain. The police have registered a non-cognisable offence against Mr. Patil.
