Communal clashes in Udgir city of Maharashtra’s Latur district led to the second consecutive day of curfew on Sunday.
The controversy started after a group of Hindu right wing organisations alleged that the ‘green’ flag was hoisted atop the city’s fort. On Saturday morning, they staged demonstrations in front of the municipal office and later a protest march throughout the city.
According to the police, the trouble started after the protest march entered the area dominated by the Muslim community. “There are allegations from both sides that the opposite side pelted stones initially. The crowd damaged property and shops in the vicinity,” said a police officer.
