Congress sets up committee for re-organisation of panchayat bodies

July 24, 2014 09:56 am | Updated 09:56 am IST - JAIPUR:

The Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee president Sachin Pilot on Wednesday constituted a committee to oversee the delimitation exercise for the Panchayati Raj Institutions in the State.

The five-member committee will comprise Mahendrajit Singh Malviya, Gopal Singh Shekhawat, Murari Lal Meena, Ashok Bairwa and Mahendra Chowdhary.

De-limitation

According to party spokesperson Archana Sharma, the State government has started the process of de-limitation of Gram Panchayats and Panchayat Samitis. The committee will coordinate with the block and district units of the party for any objections and suggestions.

Meanwhile, the government on Tuesday announced the schedule for elections to 46 urban local bodies while elections for these would be held in November, the remaining 138 will go to polls in July-August next year.

No direct election

The Rajasthan government recently reversed the 50 per cent reservation for women followed by the previous regime as it is stayed by the Supreme Court. This time 33 per cent seats will be reserved for women in the local bodies elections. Also, this time, there will be no direct election for the Mayors. Instead these will be elected by the councillors. Of the seven cities for which elections will be held later this year, all are unreserved.

However, of the total of 184 urban local bodies, 114 are open for general categories, 36 reserved for OBCs, 28 for Scheduled Castes candidates and six for Scheduled Tribes.
