The Congress on Saturday welcomed efforts by the UPA government to end the stalemate in Parliament stalemate on the issue of foreign direct investment in multibrand retail, underscoring the need for a broad consensus on the subject that has dominated political debate for over a week.
“The party welcomes all meaningful efforts to break this stalemate. In such a situation, a broad consensus is required amongst different stakeholders,” general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said after reports from Kolkata suggested that the Union Cabinet decision would be put on hold.
However, the party statement backing the government has led to interpretation, amid an indication that the effort is to enable the winter session of Parliament get going when it reconvenes next Wednesday.

The session has been a washout since it began on November 22, first due to the Opposition insistence on an adjournment motion over price rise and black money, followed by a strident demand that the decision on FDI be rolled back.
