CCTVs in buses likely

January 02, 2014 02:34 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:37 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Bus and autorickshaw travel could become a tad better if the proposal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways gets the nod of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) at its meeting on Thursday.

The Finance Ministry has approved the proposals of the Transport Ministry under the Nirbhaya fund of Rs. 1,000 crore and at its Thursday meeting is likely to stamp its approval.

The proposal is to have CCTVs to record the events, while autorickshaws must compulsorily fit GSP devices for tracking and enforcement to ensure safety of women commuters.

The Ministry has proposed women enforcement wings in transport departments and women drivers and conductors to make the public transport system more conducive for women.

The Railway Ministry has decided to provide a helpline and update its SMS system. The Railways, however, decided to fund the pilot scheme themselves.

Other Ministries too are expected to put forward their proposals for approval.
