CBI to examine Vanzara’s claims in letter

The Central Bureau of Investigation will examine the veracity of the contents of the resignation letter by Gujarat police officer D.G. Vanzara, who has been in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati jail since 2007 for his alleged involvement in fake encounter cases.

In his letter, he accused the Narendra Modi government of framing police officers while protecting the interests of politicians close to the Chief Minister.

A senior CBI official said they would try to ascertain if it provided further leads in the cases.

While the CBI has filed the first charge sheet in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, it is in the process of finalising the second charge sheet that would focus on the larger conspiracy behind the killing of the young woman from Mumbai and three others.

While names of four Intelligence Bureau officials have cropped up, the CBI is also trying to ascertain if those then at the helm of affairs in the State government knew about the conspiracy.

In his letter, Mr. Vanzara, accused the State government of making the arrested policemen carry out the encounters.

“We, being field officers, have simply implemented the conscious policy of this government, which was inspiring, guiding, and monitoring our actions from very close quarters…,” he wrote.
