The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday questioned its own sleuths as part of its probe into the alleged collusion between its counsel in the 2G case, A.K. Singh, and one of the accused — Sanjay Chandra, Unitech’s Managing Director.
Pointing to corporate rivalry behind the recording and leak of an audio tape that purportedly contained the voice of Mr. Singh and Mr. Chandra discussing prosecution strategies, CBI sources said they were trying to find out whether Mr. Singh had advised officers involved in the probe to suppress any information during court hearings.
The CBI has already quizzed other members of its prosecution team.

The sources said the tape has been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to check its authenticity, and once they got its report, they would decide whether to approach the court for cancellation of Mr. Chandra’s bail.
The tape might have been recorded by someone present in a room along with Mr. Singh and Mr. Chandra and known to the two, preliminary investigation indicated. It also pointed to growing corporate rivalry in the telecom sector to grab precious spectrum, the sources said.
After registering a Preliminary Enquiry, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha had formed a special team to look into the issue, besides informing Chief Justice of India Justice Altamas Kabir, and Law Ministry officials about Mr. Singh’s removal from the prosecution team.
