By-polls to 4 LS, 6 Assembly seats on June 2

The Election Commission on Friday announced that by-elections to four Lok Sabha and six Assembly constituencies in five States will be held on June 2. Counting of votes will be taken up on June 5.

The Lok Sabha constituencies that go to the polls are Maharajganj (Bihar), Porbandar and Banaskantha (both in Gujarat), and Howrah (West Bengal). The Assembly constituencies are Yavatmal (Maharashtra), Handia (Uttar Pradesh), and Morva Hadaf (ST), Limbdi, Dhoraji and Jetpur (all in Gujarat).

Poll notification will be issued on May 8 and the last date for filing of nominations is May 15. The next day, the papers will be taken up for scrutiny and May 18 is the last date for withdrawal of candidatures, if any. Polling will be held between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect. It will apply to political parties, candidates, respective State governments and the Central government.
