Several Bollywood personalities came forward on Sunday in support of Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy, who was arrested on Friday for failing to appear before the Supreme Court in a fraud case.

Among those present at the press conference were filmmaker and producer Ramesh Sippy, actors Fardeen Khan and Johny Lever, singers Nitin Mukesh, Sadhana Sargam, Sapna Mukharji and Rahul Vaidya. “He has helped thousands of people in the film industry. He is a very nice man but nobody is talking about it,” Mr. Sippy said.

Fardeen Khan said he had come forward to save Mr. Roy from character assault. “At such times, the person goes through character assassination. We are here to defend him and are asking that be given a chance to defend himself.”

None of them agreed to answer questions on how they could have benefited from Mr. Roy’s company.
