While certain tests to ascertain the gender of athlete Pinki Pramanik were conducted at a district hospital in the State’s North 24 Parganas district on Tuesday, she has been referred to the SSKM Hospital in the city for further tests. Ms Pramanik has represented the country in international meets and is currently facing allegations of rape.

According to Sukanta Sil, the district’s Chief Medical officer of Health (CMOH), a seven-member medical team conducted several tests on Ms Pramanik, , the reports of which will be sent to the court in a sealed envelope.

The district hospital did not have the necessary infrastructure to conduct certain other important tests like chromosomal and hormonal blood tests so Ms Pramanik has been referred to a city hospital, Dr Sil added.

Ms Pramanik was arrested late in the evening on June 14 and was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days by a district court the next day.

The court had told the police that the athlete’s gender must be determined through medical tests at a government hospital within the 14 day period of judicial custody. According to the police, Ms Pramanik had refused to undergo medical tests on two earlier occasions.

Her neighbour had filed a police complaint at Baguihati police station accusing the athlete of being a male who repeatedly tortured and raped her. Ms Pramanik and her family members have denied the allegations and claimed that it was a conspiracy against her.
