At the meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on 2G to be held on September 27 as announced by its chairman P.C. Chacko, the DMK is all set to request for a detailed examination of affidavits and letters of the Department of Telecom (DoT).
Though the DMK’s strength in the JPC has come down to one from two, with Rajya Sabha member Tiruchi Siva having completed his term, party sources said T.R. Baalu, its parliamentary party leader and the other member of the JPC, was capable of handling the situation. For, the 2G spectrum allocation issue involved the prestige, image and the reputation of the party.
Mr. Baalu has written to Mr. Chacko stating that, “A bare reading of these affidavits/letters will show that the DoT had fully explained and justified its position on various issues such as entry fee, cut-off date, FCFS policy, eligibility of applicant companies, which are now being considered by this JPC.”

As such, it became very necessary to examine those affidavits and letters (of the DoT) in detail and examine officers who were instrumental in preparing and settling those affidavits/letters before the JPC closed its proceedings.
“I understand that these affidavits/letters have been admitted in the CBI Special Court also,” he said, adding this important aspect of the matter within the terms of reference of the JPC had so far been overlooked or ignored.
Mr. Baalu wanted to know the reason for not considering those vital documents as they were submitted by the DoT before the Supreme Court, the Delhi High Court and in reply to CAG’s queries when it conducted the performance audit of the DoT.

The JPC meet is to finalise its report, which is likely to be given to the Lok Sabha Speaker in the next few weeks. It will be tabled in Parliament during the winter session.
