Anti-terror ops will continue in J&K, says Army Chief

As Jammu and Kashmir came under Governor’s rule on Wednesday, Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat said it will not have any impact on the ongoing anti-terror operations in the Valley.

“We don’t have any kind of political interference,” he said in response to questions from the media.

The operation would continue as earlier. The month-long Non-Initiation of Combat Operations (NICO) was, he said, revoked as terrorists continued their violence.

“Operations were being carried out earlier as well. Then we saw a phase of suspension of operations, because we wanted people to get a chance to offer their prayers during Ramzan without any problem. Despite that, terrorists continued with their activity, which is why the suspension of operations was cancelled,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir came under Governor’s rule after the BJP pulled out of the coalition government with the PDP due to differences over resuming military operations. On Sunday, the Union Home Ministry revoked the month-long NICO and security forces resumed full-fledged anti-terror operations.
