Women’s associations in Hindupur led by the YSRC women’s organisation on Thursday staged a protest demanding that actor and Hindupur MLA Balakrishna resign from the State Assembly.

The protest, which was organised in the One Town area of Hindupur, was supported by women’s organisations of the Left parties, and led to traffic jams in the town.

Police tried to evacuate them for staging an unauthorised protest on the streets. But the protesters offered to walk down to the police station.

Earlier, Hindupur town president of the YSRCP women’s organisation Nagamani accused Mr Balakrishna of having little respect for women as was ‘evident from his ‘grisly’ comments on women at an audio release function in Hyderabad a few days ago.

“He (Balakrishna) reels out dialogues in movies supporting women. But his true intentions and thoughts on women have come out into the open. He needs to be arrested for his comments on women,” Ms Nagamani said.

The protestors also gave a written complaint to the police at the Hindupur One Town police station against Balakrishna and demanded that the police book a case and arrest him.

With the police assuring the protestors that a case would be booked after due preliminary investigation, the protestors relented and left the station.

The police warned them against staging a protest without permission.
