VVPAT system for Nandyal byelection

‘Voters can see the party for which they cast their vote’

The Voter Verification Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system would be introduced for the Nandyal byelection slated on August 23, in which a voter could see the party to which his/her vote was cast on the VVPAT status display unit placed in the electronic voting machines, said District Collector S. Satyanarayana on Saturday.

The serial numbers and the names of the candidates and the symbols allotted to them would be loaded in the VVPAT unit with the help of the ECIL engineers including the dummy symbols and dummy candidates. A check would be conducted to see if the unit correctly printed the slips.

Verification

The applications of 16,378 persons for enrolment and rectification of discrepancies pending as on July 26 would be verified and eligible voters would be added to the 2,09,612 voters — 1,06,223 of them women — as on January 16, the Collector told the media here.

The booth-level officers of 238 polling stations would visit each house and verify the pending applications, he said.

Twenty five supervisors and seven tahsildars had been deputed to check the verification done by the BLOs and the final voter list would be published on August 5, the last date for filing nominations. He said 3,199 entries of absent, shifted and deceased voters would be verified and deleted.

A control room was arranged at the Kurnool Collectorate with phone numbers 08518 277305 and 277309 to receive complaints.

Permission on behalf of the revenue and police would be given through a single window system.

Border checkposts were being put up and flying squads and static video survey line teams had been arranged. Election material would be distributed in the Government Polytechnic at Nandyal. The expenditure of a contestant should not exceed ₹28 lakh, Mr. Satyanarayana said.
