Focus on completing Polavaram, says MLA-elect

Tenders for completing construction of distributary canals of the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) network in Anantapur district would be floated soon to ensure water in 10 lakh acres, said Rapthadu MLA-elect Thopudurthi Prakash Reddy.

After a review meeting with Irrigation Department officials here on Monday on the status of the construction and widening of the HNSS main canal, Mr. Reddy said Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had promised water across the area and 100 tmcft to people in each district by interconnecting rivers.

In instances where contractors or the previous government had increased estimates or expanded the scope of work unnecessarily, those responsible would be brought to book, he said, adding that focus would be laid on completing the Polavaram project as well.

He said call centres could be set up at the Sri Krishnadevaraya University and the JNTU Anantapur so that local youth could secure jobs here instead of moving to Bengaluru or Hyderabad for opportunities.

Meanwhile, Penukonda MLA-elect and BC Welfare Minister M. Shankar Narayana had raised the issue of supplying groundnut seeds to farmers in the district with the Chief Minister before a Cabinet meeting on Monday and he had assured him of an improved supply.
