‘Crop failure, mounting debts reasons’

Nagamma, a TDP MPTC member from Mahantapuram village of Kundurpi mandal in the district, attempted suicide late on Monday night due to mounting debts.

This brings into focus the nature of farm crisis in the district, regardless of ones social position.

Ms. Nagamma and her family had raised considerable amounts of money as loan from moneylenders in the run-up to the MPTC elections in the hope that a win would alter their financial future for the better and bring them out of the crisis they had been facing on the agriculture front.

“However, with the win not leading to any betterment in the family’s finances and the crops failing year after year, the debts have increased, and she felt belittled as the moneylenders and bankers have started visiting her regularly,” the Kundurpi police told

The Hindu .

The police said that Ms. Nagamma consumed pesticide late in the night. Noticing her in an unconscious state, her family members shifted her to a primary health centre locally and then to the government general hospital in Anantapur.

Ms. Nagamma’s condition continued to be critical, sources said. Police registered a case.
