TDP hopes for unanimity, still launches campaign

January 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 02:46 pm IST - TIRUPATI:

TDP candidate M. Suguna seeks the blessings of an elderly woman during her campaign ahead of the bypoll in Tirupati.

Notwithstanding the Congress naming R. Sreedevi as its candidate for the by-election, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders are still pinning hopes that the election will remain ‘unanimous’.

The Congress defied expectations and threw its hat in the ring in the last minute, making the election inevitable. The party seeks to make the most of the vacuum created by the absence of the YSRC, the second major contender in the 2014 general elections, in its bid to increase its acceptance, especially after bifurcation. Keen to recover from the poll debacle, the Congress is all set to use this by-poll to test its fortunes ahead of the corporation elections.

TDP senior leader Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu and the candidate M. Suguna have once again appealed to the Congress to reconsider its decision to field a candidate in the by-election and help make it unanimous. While Ms. Suguna formally launched her campaign on Monday and started visiting colonies seeking support of voters, Congress candidate R. Sreedevi attended the R-Day celebrations at the TTD headquarters here, appealing to people to vote for her.
