TDP accused of creating confusion over new capital

The different views being aired by the ruling party members about the location of the new capital city came in for criticism in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council.

Even as the Sivaramakrishna Committee’s report is awaited, the government is ‘jumping the gun.’ Should it not wait for the report before taking a decision, wondered Leader of Opposition in the Council, C. Ramachandraiah here on Tuesday.

Mr. Ramachandraiah, who moved an adjournment motion on various alternatives for capital city, wondered at the various leaks and some times official statements made by the Telugu Desam Ministers and people’s representatives on location of capital city.

The Central committee constituted by the Union government will give its report in six months as laid down by the AP State Reorganisation Act. “ It is only an advisory committee and it is the prerogative of the government to choose the location. But one should not forget the issue relates to all people and not to one party. The government before taking a decision should debate it and consider views of all in the House,” he said.

After Chairman A. Chakrapani suggested that the members give their views to the committee or discuss the issue when the Committee submits its report, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Narayana responded positively.

The House could discuss the matter after the Sivaramakrishnan Committee would submit its report by month-end. “The government is committed to giving equal priority to all districts. But for capital city we will select a location that is convenient to people of all districts,” he said.
