About a dozen surgeries at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) were postponed on Monday owing to water shortage attributed to pipeline works.
NIMS officials said surgeries were postponed as running water was not available in elective operation theatres. As these surgeries were not emergency procedures, they were deferred.
The hospital managed to conduct two emergency procedures after acquiring water through tankers, the officials informed.

“The water supply was restored at around 12 noon. Even after restoration of water supply, we are not able to avail the entire amount required. For the rest, we are dependent on tankers,” said an official, who requested not to be named. The hospital uses around 1,000 kiloliters of water every day. Officials of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) said that they had notified the NIMS administration about the water stoppage scheduled on Sunday, four days in advance. The stoppage was to facilitate pipeline interconnection works and involved Banjara reservoir which supplies water to Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills and Punjagutta.
“The shutdown was notified and we had informed the hospital management to store adequate water. We also offered to provide tankers immediately on request,” a senior official said.
“However, the hospital’s storage capacity is clearly inadequate,” he added, while stating that water was released on Monday morning and the quality of the supply was also checked to ensure purity.
