Srikakulam district administration is gearing up to handle possible crisis with the impact of cyclonic storm Phethai. The senior officials including Collector K. Dhananjaya Reddy and Joint Collector K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu held an emergency meeting on Monday early hours with the heads of irrigation, revenue, fire service and other departments.
The Collector said that the district might receive 20 cm rainfall and it might to lead to floods to Vamsadhara, Nagavali, Bahuda and other rivers. He directed Vamsadhara Irrigation Circle M. Surender Reddy to coordinate with Odisha administration to monitor the inflows from catchment areas of Odisha. He said that proper release of water from Gotta barrage would minimise the inundation of low-lying areas. He said that sudden release of huge waters would lead to untold miseries to the people.
Mr. Dhananjaya Reddy has also directed Fisheries Department Joint Director V.V. Krishnamurthy to give wide publicity about the suggestions of IMD in fishermen dominated villages for next couple of days.

“The impact of Phethai might be very severe in Srikakulam district as it has 197 km long coast line. That is why; we did not want to take any chance. With the establishment of control rooms in mandals and all sensitive villages, we are getting information about the ground level situation,” said Mr.Dhananjaya Reddy.
Mr. Chakradhar Babu said that the ‘Set Conference’ facility would help the district administration to handle the cyclone. Meanwhile, all the streets in Srikakulam wore deserted look with the people remained indoors with the drastic change in temperature and light rain due to the impact of Phethai. With the official declaration of holiday for schools, the parents and children heaved a sigh of relief.
The government also directed the educational department to declare holiday for private schools also. Many colleges are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
