Cine hero Sivaji on Sunday began an indefinite fast here on Sunday demanding that the Centre immediately grant special status to Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Sivaji had earlier took part in several demonstrations at Rajahmundry and Vijayawada over the issue.
His protest on the road opposite the Collector's office drew considerable response. Dalit and Tribal organisations were present as he launched the fast. Leaders of Aam Aadmi Party also extended their support. Former APCOB chairman Vasantha Nageswara Rao was also present.
The protest was preceded by some high drama as the Guntur Urban Police denied Sivaji the permission to launch a protest at the Hindu College Junction. Later, the permission was given to start an agitation at the Collector's office on the condition that the latter would refrain from provocative utterances.

The cine hero latest salvo against the BJP-TDP combine comes after a day long protest by Congress here which also drew an enthusiastic response indicating that the issue seemed to be striking a chord with people. Earlier, a man kept police and fire personnel on tenterhooks for several hours after climbing a 100 metre tall cell tower demanding separate status.
Demanding that the Centre immediately concede the demand of the people of the State, Mr. Sivaji called upon people to launch protests wherever they were and gear up to an agitation.
I am not undertaking this fast for selfish reasons as I have nothing to gain. But I appeal to people to fight for our rights, or else the State will be doomed
