The Supreme Court on Thursday granted DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan early hearing on his plea challenging the Karnataka High Court’s refusal to drop Bhavani Singh as special public prosecutor in the appeals filed by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and other accused in a Rs. 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case and allow him to assist the prosecution side.
A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu agreed to hear him on Friday (February 27), the last working day before the apex court closes for Holi holidays, on a representation made by senior advocate T.R. Andhyarujina and advocate V.G. Pragasam for the DMK leader.
Mr. Anbazhagan had moved the Supreme Court on February 20 challenging two separate orders passed by the High Court earlier this month in connection with the ongoing hearing in the Jayalalithaa case.

In the first order on February 5, the High Court dismissed Mr. Anbazhagan’s plea to help the prosecution side in the appeals while observing that he is a “political opponent” and has no statutory right.
Again, on February 11, the High Court rejected his challenge and held that Mr. Singh was entitled to appear as special public prosecutor in the appellate stage without any written authority.
