December 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 24, 2016 02:08 pm IST - KURNOOL:

Hundreds of students took part in ‘Save Handri’ rally from Raja Vihar Centre to Sri Krishna Devarayulu Circle here on Saturday to focus on perils of river pollution, desilting Handri river and demanding construction of drainage channels on either sides of the river.

Kurnool MLA S.V. Mohan Reddy, Panyam MLA Gouru Charitha Reddy, ‘Save Handri’ movement founder P. Ranganath Reddy, students and NCC cadets of Montessori, Cattamanchi and Osmania colleges took part in the rally. Unbridled discharge of municipal waste, discharge of industrial pollutants, illegal sand mining, encroachments and growth of vegetation have narrowed down Handri river, making it prone to flooding during rainfall, the MLAs and Mr. Ranganath Reddy said.

‘Save Handri’ movement was launched on the International Volunteers Day on December 5, 2012 to create awareness among the people on river pollution. The rallyists took up symbolic cleaning of the river on Saturday morning and staged a candle light demonstration near Konda Reddy Fort in the night.
