Sattenapalli students sink hand washing relay record

More than 1,200 students set a new Guinness record by being part of a massive hand washing relay organised in a single location completing the feat in three-and-a-half hours here on Monday.

As the programme got under way on the premises of Agricultural Market Committee here at 2.30 pm, more than 1,200 students were seen standing in a queue waiting for their turn at the wash basin, squeezing out a drop of sanitary solution and washing them with water as they were watched by Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao, representative from Guinness World Records Lucia Sinigaglisei and UNICEF chief for AP and Karnataka Ruth Leano.

The earlier record for mass hand washing relay in India was held by Xavier School of Management (XLRI), Jamshedpur where 991 students took part in the mass hand wash programme completed in four-and-a-half hours. Dr. Siva Prasada Raosaid the programme was organised as part of Swach Bharat-Swach Sattenapalli. Ms. Ruth Leano said a call centre for addressing issues relating to rural sanitation was set up in the office of Collector, Guntur. The toll free help line number is 040-3091100.
