The issue of Rohith Vemula, student of University of Hyderabad, who allegedly committed suicide against discrimination on January 17, echoed in the Telangana Assembly on Saturday when Congress legislator S.A. Sampath Kumar made a mention of it during the debate on motion thanking the Governor’s address.
Raising the issue as part of his speech, Mr. Sampath Kumar said it was unfortunate that the issue that stirred the country’s consciousness and brought together all those with Ambedkar ideology and ones concerned about the downtrodden section did not even find a mention in the Governor’s address although it happened in the State Capital. Even a small mention of it would have soothed hurt feelings of a large section in the society, he felt.
Even the State Government actions did not help create any confidence among the sections aggrieved over Rohith Vemula’s suicide and the circumstances leading to it, Mr. Sampath Kumar said and mentioned that there were no arrests even as TRS Floor Leader in Lok Sabha A.P. Jithender Reddy had stated in Parliament that Telangana Chief Minister had ordered the arrest of all those who were responsible, however influential they might be.

Criticising the ruling TRS further he said, the party had repeatedly stated before coming to power that the agenda of naxals would be its agenda but the incident such as the one taken place at Veenavanka had become regular and the civil liberties were being flayed widely in the State.
