Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury faced the ire of the Telangana political Joint Action Committee members in New Delhi on Saturday.
The MP went to Andhra Pradesh Bhavan to express solidarity with a group of students affiliated to the students’ JAC in protest against the merger of some villages of Bhadrachalam division, likely to be submerged by Polavaram project, with residuary Andhra Pradesh. Her presence, however, did not go down well with the political JAC and employees’ representatives, who were staging a separate dharna at the same venue. They raised slogans of ‘Renuka Go Back’ but the student leaders opposed them.
Tension prevailed for some time as the students and opponents of Ms. Renuka raised slogans and counter-slogans and jostled with one another. The political JAC and employees were firm that the Congress MP leave the venue as she had not consoled the families of youth who had committed suicide for a separate Telangana. Ms. Renuka, on her part, stated that she had come in support of students who were agitated against a merger of some areas under Bhadrachalam with Seemandhra. The MP wanted the Centre to withdraw its decision of merging the villages of Bhadrachalam division with Seemandhra . The leaders of JAC later called on TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao at his residence.
