Protesters target Rajiv, Indira’s statues

Girl students of Adikavi Nannaya University arrange a fruit stall in one of the road junctions in Rajahmundry on Saturday to tell that bifurcation of state will lead to division of commodities, fruits.

Cross section of people, particularly working class, participated in the ongoing agitation for united Andhra Pradesh in East Godavari district on Saturday. The statues of Congress leaders, particularly Rajiv and Indira Gandhi, are being targeted by protesters on sixth day on Saturday at two to three places in the district. Burning of tyres, hunger strikes, rallies with bare chest, cleansing of statues were held in different parts of the district.

Rajiv Gandhi statue in government school of Nagaram village in Mamidikuduru mandal was set on fire on Saturday afternoon by some protesters and statue of Indira Gandhi was desecrated in Gondhi village of Sankhavaram mandal. Agitators took out tractor and bike rallies in Gollaprolu, Kirlampudi, Bikkavolu, Seethanagaram, Kajuluru and Kadiyam on Saturday.

In Rajahmundry, single owner lorry association of quarry area has taken out a huge rally with fleet of lorries up to Kotipalli bus stand on Saturday. They raised slogans against State bifurcation . It was followed by a big rally of motor cycle mechanics association with over 5,000 bikes . .

The rally organised by Cable TV operators was led by CCC network managing director and one of the prominent Auditors V. Bhaskarram and Pantam Kondal Rao, former corporator. The rally on bikes covered all the major centres in Rajahmundry city and there was a demonstration with all cable operators at Ramalayam Centre near A.V. Apparao Road, which was addressed by Mr. Bhaskarram, who is the also All India President of Table Tennis Association. Later, the demonstrators went to Kotagummam where Mr. Bhaskarram and others cleansed the statue of Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu with milk. NGO’s Association led by Geddada Sriharibabu, Venu Madhav, city JAC secretary Haribabu, women wing chairman Kamala, secretary B. Jhonson and others have organised a novel protest at Ramalayam Centre near AV Apparao Road. All the NGOs sat on the road by displaying placards of different departments of Secretariat and told the public that if the State is divided all the NGOs working in secretariat have to sit under a tree or road and do their work. They held KCR responsible for present agitation . Advocates JAC led by Muppalla Subba Rao, AP State Bar Council Member, demanded registration of cases against TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
