Police personnel including the accused in the Vakapalli gang-rape case have welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to speed up the trail.
The court on September 1 ordered that the trial against the 13 Greyhounds personnel allegedly involved in the gang-rape of 11 Adivasi women be expedited and concluded in six months.
“This has come as a relief to us, as the family members of the accused have been undergoing a mental torture for the last 10 years,” said President of the Visakhapatnam District Police Officers Association K.V.R.S. Subba Raju.

The incident took place in Vakapalli village in Nurmati panchayat of G. Madugula mandal in the agency region of Visakhapatnam district on August 20, 2007. And since then the trial has not begun after the Paderu court accepted a private petition filed by the victims in August 2008 as the accused approached the AP High Court and got a stay.
After the stay was quashed on April 26, 2012, the accused approached the Supreme Court and obtained a stay, which was vacated on September 1.
“We want the trial to begin so that it can be proved that the case was fabricated against us by the tribals with the help of a few people’s organisations and the Maoists. The aim was to put brakes to our anti-Maoist operation in the agency areas,” said Mr. Subba Raju.
