Experts of UNICEF and Dr. Ambedkar University are going to monitor sanitation and drinking water condition in 294 villages which were affected by Phailin cyclone last year on regular basis and improve the situation with the support of villagers and employees of the departments concerned.

The university teams which conducted a survey with the assistance of UNICEF will come out with a final report in a couple of months. UNICEF-Hyderabad field office Chief Ruth Leona, UNICEF Water and Sanitation officer S.R. Nalli on Tuesday interacted with Vice-Chancellor H. Lajipathi Rai and discussed the details of the survey which was taken up eight months ago. They felt that proper awareness programmes were required to avoid contamination of water in the respective areas. It was also observed that many villagers were depending on local tanks with frequent repairs to bore wells. “We will involve locals to improve basic sanitation conditions. The university will also play a key role in providing safe drinking water in selected villages with the government support,” said Dr. Lajipathirai.
