‘Only then will Medical Council of India sanction additional seats for MBBS intake’

The Hospital Development Committee(HDC) of Government General Hospital, Anantapur, has sought the State government to provide 10 acres of land adjacent to the current premises to increase bed strength from 700 to 1200.

The MBBS course intake at Anantapur Government Medical College will go up from 150 to 200 in view of the implementation of economically weaker sections (EWS) quota from 2020-21 academic year, but unless there was 1200 bed strength, the Medical Council of India(MCI) will not sanction the additional number of seats, hence there was an urgent need for land, Anantapur Urban MLA Anantha Venkatarami Reddy said during the HDC meeting on Wednesday evening.

At the meeting, hospital superintendent M. Ramaswamy Naik, along with District Collector S. Satyanarayana, explained that the land on the GGH campus was only enough for 700 bed strength. The MLA suggested Department of Fire, Forest and DM&HO office lands, which were close to the GGH, could be considered.

Meanwhile, the HDC also resolved to pay salaries for the 40 security personnel and supervisor following ending of contract with earlier manpower supplier Jai Balaji Security Services Limited. The current burden on the HDC will be ₹3.5 lakh per month.

The amount is usually centrally paid by the government, but since this was a local stop-gap arrangement, the hospital needs to pay from local funds for now. The HDC, however, has only ₹7 lakh in its account, Dr. Naik said.

Meanwhile, the HDC has asked the R&B to enhance the compensation for loss of 15 of its shops that were demolished for construction of Road Over Bridge. While the compensation amount is yet to be paid, the HDC has asked the government to enhance it from ₹5.99 lakh to ₹1.43 crore as the commercial value of land was very high there.
