The students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) went berserk and broke the glass facade of the main building demanding the management to resolve the problems faced by them.

Two security guards were grievously injured and one student too suffered injuries in the melee.

In an unexpected development, some 500 students gathered at the administration building demanding the NIT director to come out and listen to their demands. The director refused to come down and instead asked the student council delegates to come to his chamber to discuss.

When the delegates went inside, rest of the students tried to barge in, but in vain. The students forced their entry by breaking the glass door.

The authorities called in the police and they registered cases against two students- Chitraketh and Kranthi- both final year civil engineering students who created the trouble.

The Hindu , NIT director Prof. T. Srinivasa Rao said that the students came up with 23 demands which were all unreasonable. “We are using breathe analysers and are checking those coming late from outside the campus. They want us to withdraw that,” he said.

The entry to girls hostel is till 9 p.m. which the students want to be extended till 10 p.m. They also want the food delivery boys from outside restaurants to be allowed into the hostels. “Nowhere in the country in any institution are girls allowed to go out after dark. We cannot accept their demand. We cannot allow food delivery boys as it will create problems,” Prof. Srinivasa Rao said.

According to him, there were some genuine demands such as repairs to lift in hostels and cleaning of bathrooms and water tanks. “These demands are taken care of without any delay. The lift is being used irresponsibly,” he explained.

Sources in the institute revealed that the students’ council was divided into two groups and they were fighting for the control over the affairs.

The employees too were divided with one opposing the management and the other supporting it. The disgruntled employees were encouraging the students and provoking them to go against the management, the sources said.
