‘Party chief was constrained to take a stand in favour of State bifurcation in a ‘self-defence mode’ as the Congress was out with its game plan to finish the TDP in the Telangana region in collaboration with TRS’

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) general secretary Gorantla Buchchaiah Chowdary on Thursday found fault with the ‘two-eye’ theory of his party president N. Chandrababu Naidu. “The theory has gone against the interests of the Seemandhra region in practice,” he observed at a media conference here.

He said that his party leader was constrained to take such a stand and issue a letter of consent to the Nited Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in favour of State bifurcation in a ‘self-defence mode’ when the Congress was out with its game plan to finish the TDP in the Telangana region in collaboration with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS).

Asked whether his party could afford to take such a stand for political considerations by compromising on public interest at large, the TDP senior leader shot back, “What else does a political party pursue other than politics. For that matter, the Congress is also doing the same thing on the Telangana issue by seeking to kill ‘three birds’ at one shot — finishing off the TDP and merging the TRS with it in the Telangana region on the one hand and planning for a post-electoral alliance with the YSR Congress on the other, all in a bid to see its leader Rahul Gandhi in the post of Prime Minister in the next general elections.”

Admits party committed mistakes

Making a plainspeak on his party’s stand vis-à-vis the agitations in the Telangana and Seemandhra regions on the issue of statehood, Mr. Chowdary stated, “We do admit that our party has committed some serious mistakes which are being discussed threadbare in the party forums.”

In fact, the ‘Atmagaurava Yatra’ proposed to be undertaken by his party chief from September was just intended to pour out his soul before the people in the Seemandhra region, he asserted.

Mr. Chowdary, however, treaded with caution while commenting on the resignation of his party colleague Nandamuri Harikrishna from the memberships of Rajya Sabha and the party for the ‘cause’ of Samaikhyandhra.

“He (Mr. Harikrishna) is known to be emotional and he had taken the decision at his personal level,” he said while clarifying that the TDP leadership was yet to take a stand on involving the party ranks in the proposed yatra of Mr. Harikrishna.
