Mystery surrounded the death of a woman and her daughter, whose bodies were found in an agricultural pond at Konganapalle village of Ramakuppam mandal, 100 km from here, on Saturday evening.

The Ramakuppam police said Saraswathi (30) and her daughter, Pavitra (12), left their house in the village on Friday evening, taking the cattle out for rearing.

As they did not return home, their neighbours launched a search, but in vain.

On Saturday evening, some farmers returning home noticed the bodies floating in a farm pond, which were fished out and sent for post-mortem at Kuppam hospital.

The police suspect that the duo might have fallen into the 20-foot-deep pond by accident and died. The deceased duo was allegedly seen clutching to each other’s clothes in a desperate bid to save them. The police also recorded the version of the neighbourhood that Saraswathi and her husband used to quarrel with each other frequently. A case has been registered.
