For the people of Nellore district, the flamingo migratory birds arriving at the Pulicat lake have always been a matter of pride over the decades.

To cherish these memories, artist Sk. Musavir spared sometime from his schedule to make the miniature replicas of these magnificent flamingos. He used 2.500 mg of silver to make the 10 cm long and 2.5 cm tall birds.

“I took two days to make these replicas. They have to be preserved for future generations. Our first Prime Minister Nehru said that life would be pale without such beautiful birds on earth,” said Mr. Musavir.

As the second largest brackish water lake, Pulicat in the Sullurpeta area, has emerged as the food bowl for hundreds of varieties of migratory and local birds.

Considering the ecological and tourist importance of the winter birds, the government is organising the Flamingo Festival in the surroundings of Pulicat lake every year. This year, the event is being held from January 9 to 11.
