Maoist surrenders before Vizag DIG

Deputy commander of the Korukonda area committee of the banned CPI (Maoist) party Vantala Mallesh surrendered before Deputy Inspector General of Police Visakhapatnam Range A. Ravichandra here on Friday.

The surrendered Left wing extremist carried a reward of Rs.1 lakh and the police were planning to hike it to Rs. 4 lakh, DIG A. Ravichandra told mediapersons here on Friday. Mallesh had joined the banned party in 2006 and was involved in 41 cases, including six murders and destruction of coffee pulping units in the Agency area.

The surrendered Maoist told the mediapersons that he had decided to surrender as the Maoists were killing Girijans which was purposeless. The activities had resulted in the police intensifying their combing operations which was making it difficult for the extremists. He was the deputy commander of the Korukonda Area which was headed by Naveen.

Girijans fired at

In an unrelated incident, a group of armed men fired at seven Girijans in Teemalabanda village in G.K. Veedhi mandal in the district on Friday. According to reports reaching here the armed persons reached the village in a Tata Sumo and fired indiscriminately on the Girijans there before escaping. However, no one was injured in the firing, police sources said.
