Man held for ‘cheating’ student through betting

₹13 lakh, three gold biscuits recovered from him

The Prakasam district police on Monday arrested a 26-year-old man from Maddipadu for allegedly cheating a college student of ₹23.70 lakh after luring him with huge returns through cricket betting.

Producing the accused before the media here on Monday, Superintendent of Police B.Satyayesubabu said 19-year-old Pawan Kumar, a II year student in a city engineering college, was lured to put in money in cricket betting by the accused, Narendra Reddy, who came to know that the student had ₹20 lakh insurance amount with him, which he had received following the death of his father. The student under duress also parted with three gold biscuits to the accused, who used it to raise money and give it to one Mahesh for cricket betting, the SP said.

On realising that he had been duped, the student lodged a complaint with the II Town police who after a probe recovered ₹12.70 lakh in cash and three gold biscuits with the arrest of Narendra Reddy. A probe was on to unravel all those behind the racket by analysing the mobile call data record, the SP said.

He advised students not to indulge in cricket betting and spoil their future as any cases registered against them would lead to denial of passport and jobs.
