Little champs make chess tourney a success

Game played on Swiss league basis under latest FIDE rules in The Hindu in School-organised event

Moment to cherish: Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh former Chairman P.R. Mohan with the prize winners in Tirupati on Sunday.

The chess tournament organised by The Hindu in School , presented by Thyrocare India and held under the aegis of Chittoor District Chess Association, evoked a tremendous response in the temple city of Tirupati, as nearly 188 youngsters from various schools across Chittoor, Nellore, Kadapa and Kurnool districts took part in the event here on Sunday.

The event was held at Gitam School in Bhavani Nagar Circle, the venue sponsor.

The competition held in open and girls categories was divided into four age category-wise segments i.e., under-15, under-13, under-11 and under-9, and was played on Swiss league basis under latest FIDE rules.

Prizes

In girls category: K. Arshiya, J.P. Sanvitha (under 9), P. Hema Sai Lalasa, A. Sasivadana (under 11), M. Rajeswari, A. Tanmmaye (under 13), M.N.S. Lakshmi Hima Keerthana and P. Lakshmi Rishitha (under 15) secured the first and second positions respectively.

Similarly, in the open category: G. Mohith, P. Venkata Maukthik, Sai Charan (under 9), V. Mohitha, K. Kushal Sai Chowdary, G. Chaitanya (under 11), Ayyala Shriyatha, B. Ajay Kumar Reddy, Manikantan Santosh (under 13), T. Hithin Vaibhav, T. Pardeev Krishna and G. Midhun (Under 15), won the first, second and third places respectively.

About 57 prizes/trophies, including consolation prize and cash prize (sponsored by Renu’s Charitable Trust) were distributed to the children by Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) Former Chairman P.R. Mohan, who was the chief guest.

Lauding the efforts of The Hindu in organising such events and also the parents for encouraging their children in pursuing sports and games, apart from the educational pursuits, Mr. Mohan remarked that the game of chess would inculcate three D’s – Dedication, Determination and Discipline, among the players. He narrated how Vishwanathan Anand emerged as a main role model for chess aspirants.

Outlining the State government’s push to encourage sportspersons and thrust to the arena of sports as a whole, Mr. Mohan said that major cities like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati would soon witness world-class sporting facilities.
